The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) have announced their support for the Bharat Bandh on Wednesday, organised in response to the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on Scheduled Caste (SC) reservations.
Left parties have also endorsed the strike.
State Congress spokesperson Rakesh Sinha also affirmed the party’s backing of the bandh.
The JMM has directed all its leaders, district presidents, secretaries and coordinators to actively participate in the 14-hour nationwide strike. JMM general secretary Vinod Kumar Pandey stated that the Supreme Court’s verdict on SC and Scheduled Tribe (ST) reservations would hinder the progress and empowerment of these communities.
RJD state general secretary and media In-charge Kailash Yadav confirmed that the party will support and participate in the day-long strike.
Dalit and Adivasi organisations have called for the Bharat Bandh to demand stronger representation and protection for marginalised communities. The National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Organisations (NACDAOR) has expressed opposition to a recent Supreme Court judgment by a seven-judge bench, arguing it undermines a previous ruling by a nine-judge bench in the landmark Indira Sawhney case, which established the reservation framework in India.
NACDAOR has urged the government to reject the new judgment, contending that it threatens the constitutional rights of SCs and STs. (Agencies)
